Jerry Pate constructed Kiva Dunes with thoughtful consideration for all skilllevels, testing the best players with forced carries, long par-fours, and strategic green complexes, but leaving simpler options open for less proficient golfers who simply want to enjoy their rounds. | | Custom Trip Quote to Gulf Shores | | | | | | | | | | Additional Information Jerry Pate's design integrity is such that he believes his first allegiance is to the land. And the first thing you sense when you step onto the Kiva Dunes Golf Club is how seamlessly the golf course fits the land. Towering dunes full of indigenous shrubs and small gnarled oak trees, beaten down below ten feet in height with twisted branches that have endured the torrential winds of the sea, buffer the holes, providing both shelter and hazard. The topography of the golf course matches that of the surrounding area, with every tree, every hazard, every green, and every mound fitting the landscape as if were designed by earth's original developer.
The course, built in 1995, has an eternal feel to it. "That's the mark of a good design," Pate says. "I went to great lengths to give the place a certain timelessness." And, thanks to the elements that shaped the land, the Kiva Dunes you play today will differ from the one you play next month. The dunes upon which it is built are shape-shifting foundations that shift and settle with each gust. Bunkers have been constructed by simply lifting the grass roots out of the dunes and sending the grounds crews home early so the elements can take over. At Kiva Dunes, the wisdom of the wind is always on duty. |
